Batu Caves

Situated at Wang Shu in the Gombak district in the Selangor state of Malaysia, the Batu Caves, which owns a series of cave temples and caves, is a limestone hill in this tourist destination. Being the 10th limestone hill from Ampang, these caves were named after the Sungai Batu (Stone River), flowing past the hill. It is notable that Batu Caves is also the name of a village situated nearby it.

Being the focal point of the Hindu festival of Thaipusam in the country of Malaysia, this ancient cave, which is dedicated to Lord Murugan (Lord Kartikeya – the God of War), is counted among the most famous Hindu shrines outside India. Literally ‘10th Caves or Hill’ for Lord Muruga, Batu Caves, which has been built in 1891 A.D. in the style of Tamil architecture, is one of the 10 significant sacred shrines, situated in India as well as Malaysia. The Batu Cave temple complex is located at an average altitude of 100 m above the ground.

Boasting of being the largest and well renowned temple cave in the world, the limestone forming Batu Caves is supposed to be around 400 million years old.

Lord Murugan Statue

Outside the Batu Caves, you would find the giant Lord Murugan Statue. Boasting of being the tallest statue in Malaysia, it is the 2nd tallest statue of a Hindu deity and tallest Murugan (Lord Kartikeya – the God of War) statue in the world. Having its height of 42.7 m (140 ft), this huge statue, which took the long period of 3 years in its construction, was unveiled on January 2006 A.D. on the auspicious occasion of Thaipusam festival. The material, which was applied to build this huge statue, was 350 tons of steel bars, 1,550 cubic m of concrete and 300 litres of gold paint.
